Sleeping on Beehives

Friends share a relaxing afternoon in the Honeycomb Cottage MN while catching a nap above the beehives.

A Preliminary and Multidisciplinary Study: The Effect of ‘Sleeping on The Beehives’ and Listening to Bees on Human Anxiety Levels” by Tandırcıoğlu, Acıkan, and Bilgin. This research provides valuable insights into how apihouse experiences and bee buzzing sounds can alleviate anxiety.

Study Overview

Objective: To evaluate the potential anxiety-reducing effects of apihouse experiences and bee buzzing sounds.

Participants: 60 individuals aged between 18 and 65, screened for bee allergies, phobias, and psychiatric medication use.

Methodology:

  • Group A (Apihouse Group): Exposed to a real apihouse environment with active beehives.

  • Group B (Sound Group): Exposed to recorded bee buzzing sounds through earphones.

Assessment Tool: State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Adults (STAI-AD) administered before and after exposure.

Sound Analysis

Recordings from the apihouse revealed bee buzzing frequencies ranging from 237 Hz to 416 Hz, with a mean of 274 Hz. These frequencies are consistent with non-aggressive, normal bee activity and are believed to have calming effects on the human nervous system.

Results

Both groups demonstrated significant reductions in state and trait anxiety levels (p < 0.001).

  • Apihouse Group:

    • State Anxiety Reduction: Approximately 5.93 points.

    • Trait Anxiety Reduction: Approximately 2.86 points.

  • Sound Group:

    • State Anxiety Reduction: Approximately 4.88 points.

    • Trait Anxiety Reduction: Approximately 3.05 points.

These findings suggest that both the apihouse environment and bee buzzing sounds independently contribute to anxiety alleviation.
